To my dearest:
So you’ve finally decided to take the plunge on a new bag. Now you have to decide what color to get amidst a wonderful array of colors the bag has. The regular colors carried are usually black, beige, and red. They will also most likely, always have a new selection of colors depending on season and the selection will also be different depending on stores. Unless you fall in love with one while you’re out shopping and can make a purchase on the spot. You should have a general idea of what color you would like so you can hunt down your desired color.
Now, before we proceed to the hunt, we need to decide on a color. You have to figure out what your ideal color for this piece is. First off, you have to figure out what type of girl you are. Are you usually more conservative with colors and stick to neutrals or do you like to mix and match your colors? I’m usually the type that likes to do neutral on neutral for a clean sophisticated look. However, I sometimes would opt for a brighter color because my collection lacked color. Bold colors on neutral make a statement and you can use a bag to expand your style range. It’s amazing how one bag can change your closet and outfit options so much. Strolling down the streets of New York, you’ll see an array of fashionistas all glammed up. You want to look effortlessly chic and that pop of color is the way to go.
Bags usually have an amazing selection of neutrals like black, beige, brown, taupe, white, and then some. Neutral tones give a sophisticated aura and will also allow you many more ways to wear it without any thinking.
While, neutrals are nice. I think bolder colors are a much better for the coming Spring and Summer season. It’s just oh so vibrant. Get something simple and small, and the bold color will effortlessly draw attention to your outfit. Yet not so much as to say you’re craving attention. Red is a bold classic. Cobalt blue will do great all seasons and give you a pop of color. When thinking of bold colors, figure out whether you want something that you can wear all seasons or only one season.
If you want something you can wear all seasons, I would recommend going with what we call “jewel tones”. They are colors that you would find on your favorite stones. Like red for rubies, blue for sapphire, or green for emerald. Usually these tones would do well in all seasons, of course some seasons more so than the other. If you want to choose a color like baby pink or lavender, just remember that these colors are usually not very season and closet friendly and you’ll have to think harder for ways to wear them. However, if you truly love it, go for it! What’s most important is that you enjoy what you have.
I find that there are two colors that has a perfect balance between neutral and bold. They are burgundy and mustard. Burgundy can be a pop of color when paired with neutrals. However, it can also act as a neutral when paired with color. It’s kind of like red but not really. It’s pretty darn classic and easy to match.
Mustard yellow is similar to burgundy. But I feel like most people favor the red-ish purple tone of burgundy more so than mustard yellow. Many feel that mustard yellow is hard to pair. But that’s a misconception. It’s easy to match with neutrals and adds a subtle pop of color. You can pair it with purples or red, which is opposite of the color wheel for it. What you get, is a beautiful contrast. You can pair it with it’s neighboring color, something like dark or emerald green. It’ll give a nice warm fall tone. The possibilities are really endless. I have yet to add a mustard yellow bag to my collection or a burgundy one. So I’m excited to eventually find the perfect bag to get these two colors in.
Now, I’ve given you many things to think about before deciding on a color to purchase. If you truly can’t decide whether to get a neutral or a bold. I have a tip for you – get both! I’m not saying at the same time. But it’s definitely worth collecting, even if it’s eventually. Now are you ready for the hunt? Calling your boutique store, Saks, Nordies, Neiman or Bergdorf is the way to go!
Write back and let me know what color and bag you are looking to purchase. Or let me know what color and bag you have and how easy is it to pair with your wardrobe!
Thanks for the support!

Burgundy is definitely my go-to pop of colour.
I used to be obsessed with pink but found out quite quickly that the neutral colours pair better- black is my choice when I don’t want colour.
I’m too accident prone for white or beige. And for some reason I don’t pull off the brown as nicely as I see other people do.
Also grown to love navy- is that considered a “pop” of colour or not haha.
I love burgundy as well but I do like pastel colours, especially since I wear a lot of pink and blue. Lovely bags
This is a really informative post! I don’t really have a go-to color for my bag. The one I take most often is my Speedy Vuitton, so brown. However, I do love burgundy and cobalt blue! xx corinne
I had always been a black or pink bag girl. Now I have one that was my moms – it’s a mustardy-yellow kind of color. Not one I would have picked, but I absolutely LOVE it.
This is such an great post. I’ve always love bright colors.
omg girl your breakdown was brilliant ,I never thought of it like that but it totally makes sense the “jewel tones” are so versatile and can match any outfit <3 thank you for sharing love <3
I love buying bags that are neutral in color, because they are so easy to use with any outfit. At the same time though, I absolutely LOVE the pop the color of bright bags. I usually have to fall head over heels in love with a bright bag before I buy it though, because then I know I”ll use more than once!
Some of the prices of these bags nearly made me fall off the couch. Yikes! My bag was $15 and it’s a hot pink color. Found on clearance, ha. I love it though!
I really like the jc penny bag. And, it is only 37.50. Seems like a great buy.
Great tips.
Thanks for sharing.

I always go for neutral color because they are easier to match up with outfits. But the jewel tones looks amazing… Also the color green caught me! I should get those colors as well! Thanks for the advise.

Im drawn to the mustard yellow! Its something about that color gives a great pop and great for the summer and even a good transitional color for the fall.
I’ve walked into a store before with the sole purpose of buying a new bag, only to walk out empty handed because I couldn’t decide on a color! This is very helpful.
Great post with some fantastic choices. Of course, the best solution is to have one in every colour!
I freaking love bags! Gym bags, hiking bags, purses, even the cheap market eco friendly bags…. excellent blog! xoxoxo
So awesome, I absolutely love bags, I feel like your bag tell’s people how much of a boss you are.

I love dressing in neutrals and then having a bold colored bag and shoes. Love these picks!
I love the Cobalt Blue colored bags. I already have too many but then again, I don’t have all the shades of colors yet!
Other than some basic matching I know that I am really not that good with colors. I know that I need to get better for my daughter’s sake. Although my daughter is really into that so maybe I don’t have to worry.
I’ve never really thought about this one before. I just simply pick out what stands out for me most. But for classic options, I stick with blacks and neutral tones like tan, camel or blush!

Thanks for your tips. Most of my bags are so versatile and can easily paired with most of my clothes.
I think this is a good guide. I usually buy neutral colored ones so I can wear them any time and it’s easy to pair them with outfits. I think it’s awesome to have bright colored or different colored bags as well. They add character to simple outfits.
Amazing and interesting guide! The color of my bag? I go always sure: black! Can’t choose nothing different for me!
I’m so boring, it’s always tan, black and taupe for me! So predictable. Maybe I should try colour!
Fendi Burgundy bag is my top choice!! Thanks for sharing something out of the box !! I am updating my summer shopping list after having a look on this post
One thing I cannot do. I always go with black. When I see others I always say love that color lol.
This helps so much! I always buy a black or brown bag because I never know what color to get.
Never really looked at this way before, just gone with something I like or fancy on the day, but it is worthy advice. Now where’s my purse? xx
This is great tips! The YSL bag is calling my name. Love the gold tassle and strap. It looks so luxe. Adding this to my shopping list.
My go-to colors are black and nude. I know it sounds safe but it perfectly goes with anything!
Some useful information here. Will share with my family who i know usually shop for bags every year..
I love the way you approached this topic! The inspiration boards were so helpful in getting me to envision what kind of bag would best fit my style.
Loved the burgundy and blues, black and nutmeg are always my go to colors for bags. I usually wear neutrals and black. Need some color on my bags!
